The essay assignment consists of two parts. The first component is descriptive. Students will select a social media service or search engine (eg. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, virtual game worlds, virtual social worlds, Google, etc.) and describe in their own words the official privacy policy of that service. In this paper, students cannot reproduce the official privacy policy as stated by the social media or search engine but rather must use their own words to describe its aims and content. In the course of this description, students should pay special attention to clauses which explain how personal information gathered by these services are aggregated and shared. Finally, in this paper students should attempt to draw some initial conclusions about the effectiveness of this policy in protecting the personal privacy of users. One way of assessing the effectiveness of the privacy policy of the provider is to research the kinds of privacy complaints that have typically laid against that company.
