Assessment Summary:
Select a product or service and provide a summary of the main environmental implications resulting from its production and consumption. You should justify the selection of the topic and briefly evaluate the significance of these environmental impacts. You are advised to consider the environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle.

Introduction: explain the choice of product/service
Main body: Discuss the main environmental impacts associated with the product
Conclusion: Summarise your findings and briefly mention how you will expand the topic in Essay 2

Choice of product or service:
You can choose either a tangible product or a service
Products can be either durable or consumable
Examples of durable products: automobiles, electrical appliances, electronics, furniture
Examples of consumable goods: food, cleaning supplies, fuel, printer paper
Examples of services: transport , telecommunications
You can be more or less specific in the choice of product/service.
For instance, both of the following product choices would be acceptable
- A chocolate bar
- Cadburys dairy milk
Environmental impacts of products and services:
A product or service may have environmental impacts at different stages of its lifecycle
Environmental impacts at the production sphere
- Raw materials: are any valuable ecological resources used in order to manufacture the product or deliver the service? (e.g. rare minerals)
- Energy required at the production stage: is the product or service energy intensive?
- Water use
- Impact on the local ecosystem (such as forests or rivers). Are any polluting substances resulting from the production process?
Environmental impacts associated with the consumption of the product or service
- Has the consumption of the product/service increased? You can identify some data on consumption trends
- Is it a product with a long life-cycle or does it have to be replaced frequently?
- How much energy and other resources are used in the consumption of the product/service?
- What are the environmental impacts associated with the disposal of the product? Can it be re-used or recycled?
It is important to cite the sources of information in the text
If you use any graphs, tables or figures, you also need to cite them
Specify the extent of environmental impacts whenever possible
- For instance, you can identify data regarding the typical energy consumption associated with your chosen product instead of simply noting that the product is energy intensive
