In The Double Helix James Watson recounts the process by
which he and Francis Crick came to discover the double helical structure of
DNA. Apart from the purely scientific, theoretical aspects of their work, what
institutional, political, financial, personal and other interests were at work,
ones which might reveal an inner dynamic in scientific creation that goes well
beyond the purely internal logic of scientific discovery itself? What, in fact,
based upon Watsons account (and the rejoinders of his critics) do you take to
be the most important non-scientific factors in scientific discovery? Consider
in particular Francis Cricks views on what he regards as the major elements in
his joint work with Watson.
